How does the current line of Plextor drives stack up against the beastly 8/4/32?

I currently have the 8/4/32 model and I'm going to do a system rebuild coming up and I thought it would be nice to possibly upgrade to the 16x model. What I'm wondering though is how good they are. I've heard that Plextor disabled some stuff in the firmware on the newer models awhile back so I don't know if it was confirmed or not. I've been very happy with my 8x model, since it's been able to burn everything including Safe Disc 2 protection. However, if the 16x is capable of doing all of this without any firmware hacking I'd probably be interested in upgrading for the speed increase.

Why would you buy Plextor when upgrading, if you can get a LiteOn 24x10x40 which is every bit as good, for only $105 !!!

There should be no reason to buy anything below 20x... Check out NewEgg.com.

cdrinfo.com has reviews.. i think they are neck and neck, sometimes plex gets ahead sometimes the liteon. but cuz of the price liteon ccomes out ahead, depends what you can afford i guess.

I have not owned a plextor, but have owned a LiteON and Sony.
Sony reads cd's better than LiteOn, and Plextor has similar built-in reading firmware. (use cdr-diagnostic soft to see the comparison, explained in the readme file). Both Sony and Plextor natively configed for RAW. Others are soft configed to do so.

I do understand that LiteON has made considerable improvements since the 16x10x40 that I had.

So my experience may not be current to later models. Also I have to read cd's from different burners, which you may not. Then you may never have a problem.

LiteON has a 90% read accuracy in a review by CDinfo (sorry for not having the link), where Plextor and Yamaha , Ricoh (only ones review with LiteON) were in the 99% range. This I confirmed in my applications.

Again, improvements may have corrected these error qualities.

I went for the lower cost of the LiteON, but later paid more to have a better rated burner (TEAC 516EB). Could not justify Plextor's high price. In retrospect, Sony is my next preference to Plextor. Simply for the reading capability. I compensate by using a CDRom, which for some reason they do better at reading than cdrw's (IMO).

Actually, I think that most of the reading will be done through my toshiba 12x dvd. The only thing I need the burner for is actually burning the image.

Well I have owned a yamaha 20X or so and then a lot of Plextors. I am very partial to the Plextors. Zero problems for Plextor.

The DAE on the new Plextor is alot better then the 16X

Will somone either confirm or shoot down this rumor. Someone mentioned that all new firmware releases for Plextor drives disabled the feature that allowed reading from subchannels from data tracks, whereas older firmware editions allowed it.
