How does the advertising banner on the side work (Technical question, no bashing)

First of all, I am not making fun or trying to bash the advertising banners on the side. I know I am not a subscriber, and that is the price I must pay.

How do these banners work? Are they different of every user or are they dependent on the topic being discussed. What I don't understand is, why are the banners on the side trying to sell me a Ferrari.

Topic has nothing to do with them. Basically it's advertising space and anandtech lets them put whatever will fit to their requirements there as long as it's nothing obsene, etc.

Depending on what words are found in the topics, ads relating to the topic are supposed to be displayed.
