how does that user ratings trick work?

Some of the user ratings for members have a negative number: e.g. -1,252 as their rating. Possibly, a bug with the software made this event happen.

there was a bug in previous versions of FT that allowed ratings other than 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 to be awarded to members

a small number of people knew how to do it, i was not one of them

it was likely just an input that wasn't properly filtered/bad error handling
 
I gave myself a 1000000 rating for awhile.

It causes an error page whenever someone tries to vote because for some bizarre reason it tries to parse the displayed average vote which had a comma in it as part of the vote adding code.

Edit: guess it's not fixed. But Arkitech's rating is. 🙂
