How does tattooing of a motherboard work?

From nocturnal's link i'm guessing that it's a bios that's custom-written to include certain codes which will allow the user to install modified OSs from companies like HP. I guess that "tattooing" a MB would consist of flashing it with one of these.
 
Tatooing just embeds the bios to a manufacturer, in an attempt to make hardware and software proprietary, to prevent piracy and promote replacement part/addon sales.
Chevy parts won't work in a ford engine.
Many moons ago, even some addin cards, even though they were isa, would only work with branded mb's.
