How does stereo RCA audio work?

Background: Recent purchase of some sweet little desktop speakers/monitors (iLoud Micro Monitors) from popular online auction site. Brand new in sealed package from semi reliable seller (97% rating with plenty of bad reviews about support); but they were a good price.

With the first use of RCA cables the ring (outer metal bit) of the one of the female sockets (white/left) detached from the "control" speaker and stuck onto the cable. Upon inspection the ring didn't appear to have any broken solder joints, just a couple of little serrated prongs which look like they dig into or catch the speaker body.

The Question(s): Does stereo RCA audio even need the ring/ground from both channels? Do you think the little bit which came loose was ever electrically connected?

The Rest: Obviously cables like 3.5mm (1/8') TRS to stereo RCA work with a shared ground, but this ground is physically connected within the cable. So the situation is different, but may be similar if the grounds are physically connected inside the box at either end...

Also I just rammed the ring back into place (forgetting to take a photo) and everything seems to be working fine again, but I'm not sure if I got lucky and hit it's pin or if it was never connected.

Lastly I kinda don't want to go through the returns/refunds process, and there is a 3.5mm (1/8") TRS port as backup, but obviously for the equivalent of US$250 for a little 2.0 setup one would expect no issues out of the box o_O

Yeah I don't think so. The ones I bought have more power, class D bi-amped, lower bottoms, bluetooth, more settings, and better stands/mounting; These are things I care about, but not things I asked advice about.

Edit: This may have come across badly. But I didn't come for advice on the product in question, I'm sure I have enough knowledge and experience to make up my own mind (and make my own mistakes) about which product I want. And please keep in mind when comparing products, or when talking about getting a refund, this was purchased in Australia for a good price plus an EOFY 20% off special, so it would cost about US$100 more to refund and buy again. Although obviously seller should replace or at least the manufacturer will, I don't really want to be without these speakers for weeks without a good reason.
