I am thinking about getting a used xbox on the forum here but I got some question. I heard some rumor that once a 360 changed hand, the rrod warranty is void immediately. Is it true even if the original owner enver send the unit in for repair? And do I need the original receipt to request a rrod warranty since the original owner doens't have the receipt anymore.

If it was registered you might be out of luck. Otherwise if it hasn't been, you just call them up tell them it RROD'ed and they will have you do a couple things, just tell them it's still RROD. They give you the option of them emailing you a prepaid shipping label or sending prepaid shipping box. No receipt is needed(in my case anyway).

Keep in mind that after RROD the dvd drive seems to be the next thing to fail (disc read errors) and it costs $100 to fix after the 1-year general warranty is up.
So unless it's a really good deal you might be better off with a brand-new Arcade at $200 (or less with deals) + $30 for the 20 GB HD from MS.

in my case yeah so I'd say it wouldn't be any different for you. We all know MS messed up and they know they did on the RROD defect so I think thats why they aren't strict on needing receipts and such. I got a used Xbox it RROD'ed they RMA'ed it no problem.

I'm starting my own side business on craigslist here in phoenix fixing RRODs for 360s that are out of warranty.
Let's just say I get lots of calls with even advertising 2 ads a week.
I'm not even trying, I can't wait till I actually try, I will be making some good money.

My first 360 I bought from a user here who had sent it in for repair once already, first week I had it it RROD and I called MS with the system info, they said it was repaired once and I told them that I bought it used and then they asked me for the origial owners name, address and phone number, which I had because I dont buy or sell anything here unless I have all that. Anyway, I gave the MS rep the info and then gave them mine, the warranty was transferred over to me, got my white coffin and sent it to them, and got a crappy one back but it still works and hasnt rrod in over a year. My other 2 work great and (knock on wood) hasnt hiccuped once. And I bought em all used on this forum. The other 2 I called MS and did the same over-the-phone warranty transfer.

It hasn't been touched in over a year, so it's installed correctly. You are right though, it is either the hard drive, or the controller for it. Both seem to be in the drive unit itself, judging by the pics I've seen after I googled the error.
I'm just in :shocked: at the price Microsoft gets for a 120GB drive. Thankfully I've found a guide showing you how to replace the existing drive with a new one.
I need to find out how to make a USB drive bootable using Vista first.

my 2nd 360 decided not to display a picture, but no rrod either. following instructions from some guy in another forum, i had to get the rrod for the console to work again, and wtf it seems ok now. for how long i dunno
I end up buying a jasper arcade for 180, so hopefully there won;t be a need for rrod warranty for this system.

I successfully replaced the hard drive in my 360, and now have 107GB free on a 120GB drive.
Can someone explain why I lost 13GB? When I got rid of all the crap on the 20GB, I had about
14GB free, and I had a few save games then.
Did the big M go back to using old school FAT to format, or did I mess up somewhere?

You're off by a revision.
The very first OMGMYHOUSEISONFIRE version was rumored to have a 30% failure rate.
The second version, Zephyr, was the configuration of the first Xbox 360 Elites. This is what I bought on launch day in April 2007. It's been flawless for me and was rumored to have a failure rate of less than 10%.
The third version, Falcon, showed up around the holiday season 2007 and further reduced the RROD chances to some stat that escapes me.
We're currently on the fourth version, the Jasper. The jury's still out, but as long as anecdotal evidence on forums is taken as gospel, it's doubtful we'll ever have a solid figure we can trust.
EDIT: It's DEAD!!!!! IT'S DEAD!! Good gravy, it died tonight.
