where email is "pushed" to your device so you receive it as soon as it's sent, as opposed to you "checking" for email every so often

In short, when using BES:

Enterprise e-mail system (ie Exchange) =(via LAN)=> BES =(via web & wireless data)=> Blackberry

The long version:

Initial setup:
Enterprise e-mail account info is entered into BES
User connects to BES via desktop sync
Handheld PIN & routing info is stored in BES

When an e-mail is received:
E-mail is received by enterprise e-mail system
BES reformats e-mail and attachment for handheld, forwards to blackberry via web + wireless data network
