How does overdraft protection work?

I have $1,000 overdraft protection at my bank, and they charge $21 when I use it.

Does the bank allow overdraft on checks, debit card use, or other? Will the bank always pay it? If you write a check, and it doesn't have enough funds to pay it, will it use the overdraft and not return the check NSF?

your bank charges you a fee instead of the merchant.

Well I have to test these waters this month in extreme emergency. Its either $21 here or take out a deadly selling soul to satan cash advance on credit card to pay rent for bum roommate that can't cover until his payday.
