HOW DOES ONE TELL IF AN ATHLON XP IS T-BRED? T-BRED A OR B?

Pardon my ignorance, but this is new to me. I've just put together my first AMD-based PC (1800+) and I'm curious to know what kind of processor I received. My CPU is on a brown PCB, and the first four characters in the OPN read AXDA. That's a Thoroughbred, is it not? How do I tell if it's revision 'A' or 'B'?

Found in a thread:
How can you tell if it is a Tbred B ?

I picked up a TBred 1800+ yesterday.

The codes on the cpu is: AXDA1800DLT3C AIUGA

Is that a B or a A ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is an A because of the L in the DLT3C. That stands for its default voltage of 1.5v whereas the TBredB has 1.6v and a code of U. Since it seems AMD is binning the low speed TBredBs that didn't make it into the higher grade, there's not much to worry about for now.

Actually, theres about a 150-200mhz OC difference b/w a Tbred A and B CPU :D

results all vary...

but yeah.. seems like the A;s can't get too much above the 2 ghz mark while the B's are getting into the 2.1 ghz area...

Once you have one running, you can get a program called CPUID. It reads identification registers on the CPU.

Tbred A -> Family = 6 Model = 8 Stepping = 0
Tbred B -> Family = 6 Model = 8 Stepping = 1

Heh. I assume, mechBgon, that you're referring to my habit of starting threads with an all-caps title. Heh.

KF, thanks for the heads up on that program - it's great.

The fifth digit in the stepping code is another way to tell if it's an A or B. AIUGA is a Tbred A. AIUHB , for example, is a Tbred B.

I just got a 2000+ AGOIA. How far do you think I'll be able to push this thing on an ASUS A7V8X?

Not very far, unfortunately, looks like you got a Palomino, denoted by the "AX" instead of "AXDA" for T-Breds.
