The baby oil / sugar paste may be your safest bet. It combines an abrasive crystal (sugar) to abrade off the surface skin cells with a NON-POLAR solvent (baby oil). Now I know that, when you're trying to clean this stuff off non-people surfaces, the best solvent is xylene, a non-polar aromatic solvent (Chemist's jargon). And you can use it on skin, but be warned about two things:
1. Xylene is related to benzene. Both are VERY flammable, so NO HEAT OR FLAMES!!! And both are toxic to livers, so the xylene MUST be used for only a short time in a VERY well-ventilated area.
2. Xylene (and a few other suggestions here) are very good at removing normal skin oils. After use you may find your skin feeling quite irritated and reddish. It's not a chemical burn, it's just skin completely died out and unprotected until it can restore itself. After ink removal, wash the area well with soap and water, then maybe put on just a bit of skin cream or oil to give your skin a head start on returning to normal.

I expect acetone and alcohol will be less efffective; they both are highly polar solvents. I would NOT use methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). It is a particularly good solvent for many things. But is also can actually penetrate the skin down into your body, carrying itself and any disolved materials with it. Try something safer.

Acetone is superior. There is a dilute amount in some nail polish removers. For clothing, it is a special ink remover called Amodex IIRC. Sharpe has tips in FAQs on their site.

I write with Sharpies on glassware all day long (I'm a chemist) and acetone is the solvent of choice for removing the writing. You don't want to use a lot on your skin, but a one time application to remove the Sharpie writing shouldn't hurt. Wet down a paper towel with some and start rubbing. Don't get it in your eyes though.

Yeah, acetone will take it right off. If you can't find pure acetone, try fingernail polish remover - it's just acetone to a large extent.

Yes but it really dries the skin bad.
Methyl isobutyl ketone rinse followed by a silane blow dry. You won't have to worry about dried skin!

I also hear that Krazy glue will work just as well to remove permanent marker from the skin.

Isn't most polish remover just ethyl acetate diluted anymore? Go down to your local hardware store and get some acetone.

Is it? I dunno, I thought it was still acetone. I don't really need to use it on a regular basis. ;)

Lots and lots and lots of soap and lots and lots and lots of water with lots and lots and lots of scrubbing has always worked well for me.

One time I had a huge penis and the word "BITCH" written in capitals on my forehead with work looming hours away. That was a fun 20 minutes of facial abrasion.
