How does one stay awake in class?

There is this Art History class I am taking and the lights are always off and there are slides that show up on a big projector that the professor describes information and tells it like a big story session.

Mix that with comfortable auditorium chairs and there spells trouble.

Ever had this kind of experience?

I can't keep my head up in US history 1. I don't take notes or anything in that class (I know all this stuff already, he gave us a practice final in the beginning of the year and I got an 88) and I can't keep my head up. I need tons of caffinee in the morning just to have a chance. Worse yet, he shows videos all the time with the lights out. I don't have any hope of staying awake. But then again, why should I stay awake when I'll get an A anyway.

The alligator clips are attached to a Car Battery. NO seriously, I start drawing. When I'm sick of my art, I pay attention.

I found that chewing peppermint gum helped unless the subject matter was too boring, but in that case nothing helped... I just sat in the back so no one would see me.

ahh.. that's me every monday and wednesday. i have political theory from 3-5 and i want to doze off so badly.

how do i stay awake? bring other things to entertain me. i figure if the lecture is boring me but i'm there "learning" might as well do something else.

the crossword puzzle from the newspaper works quite well. so does drawing cartoons of your classmates, professors and coworkers.

I had Art History last sememster i only fall slept in that class once! The professor always dim the light down and showing slide like your said.

What i did is i only attended the class 4 times through out the whole semester! No sh|t!
The first class, the second class, the mid term and the final exam. That's it! no kidding here.
I passed that course though.

I love those things.
One time my friend bought a box at Target, but that batch must have had too much gelatin in it, because they were slippery as hell. When they were wet you couldn't even hold them between your fingers, they were that slick.
Really brightened up our German civ class - also 1 1/2 hours of slides, or even worse, movies.

edited because i forgot the best trick of all. go to class but take a graphing calculator (if you don't have one surely you can bum one from somebody) that has blackjack loaded on it. I'm getting through calc with the theory that as long as i'm $500 ahead of the game I can consider myself mentally alert.

freesia you have to love the Daily Bruin Crossword. If I go to class, I always do the crossword, otherwise I will fall asleep. :Q Gum, soda, coffee, none of them will help to keep me awake, but the crossword does

I have a class that is in a computer lab, and no one pays attention to the prof. I always sit in the back, and can check out the 70 or so monitors of all the students. Last time I actually went to class, I saw 2 monitors that were doing what the prof was. Everyone else was browsing the web. Not even the TA was paying attention. Nekulturny has the right idea. So, yea, if you have a laptop, bring it to pretend you're taking notes, then just play minesweeper and solitaire all class

Sitting in the first row is no guarantee I have a habit of doing that and still findng ways to read a book with my eyes closed or if its an easy "A" class, I just sleep and say the hell with it.

Get a Palm/Handspring/whatever and download AvantGo. These days, half the time I just read the news in class.
