How does one play ASF streams on Linux?

Noriaki

Lifer
AFAIK only WMP plays ASF's and a friend of mine wants to run it on Linux.

Maybe run WMP through WINE...but he runs a G4 (hey at least he's got sense enough to run LinuxPPC on it, and not CracOS) so I don't know how well WINE would run....

Any idea of a program that will run ASFs under Linux?

No native player can play ASF files any more. Microsoft went and patented the ASF file format and as such only AUTHORIZED(read::windows) programs can decypher it. Right now, that list included WMP and no one else.

If he can run WMP throught WINE on his machine, that's his best bet..Regards

avifile and a couple others can play asf files, but streaming currently requires Windows Media Player. It does run under Wine on a x86 box. I haven't tried too much on the ppc box I have so I can't comment for sure
