How does one get to become an NFL ref?

You work once a week 4 months out of the year, the pay is high for the hours you work, you get the best view of anybody in the world for a football game, you get to be on TV every week..and you can fail on half the calls you make and still be employed.

Basically you're combining something you love, doesn't demand much of you physically or timewise, with good pay, where do I sign up??

I'll even settle to being a college ref.

They supposedly spend 30+ hours a week studying and going over game film. I thought I read that it only recently became a full time deal...

no, seriously. there is ref school.

and trust me, it sure as hell isnt easy.

you think its not physically demanding? you try keeping up with the players as they go for 60 yard jail break runs.

you be the umpire as the 6'4 300 lb tight end comes across the middle with a 6'5 320 lb linebacker covering him, and the T.E. decides to use you as a screen and the LB doesnt notice.

you try to catch every penalty in every way shape form, and be confident in your calls.

you then try and duck dodge, jump in on fights, and keep your ass from being run over in every play...

then come back and say it isnt demanding.

and you cant be a pussy about spiders either.

<-- refs Intramural Flag Football (not demanding) and Intramural Basketball (hard as hell)

I have a friend that refs as a sideline. He does everything from intramural to college. He travels all the time and is doing it every night, year 'round. It's very demanding mentally and physically. He gets assaulted regularly from players, fans and parents.

He's always going to ref schools too. It takes a lot of years to work your way up to the pros.

Refs are like cops. They are taught to always think they are right -- even when they are often wrong.
