I will be going to SF for an interview. What's the best way to get around? Cab? Bus? Train?

And how far is UCSF from the airport?

I havn't been anywhere my entire life and I don't know anything about traveling.

BART includes the streetcar system, which is very good, too. I have used it often when in SF.

BART is separate from MUNI (the "streetcar system"). Unless you've driven around in S.F. before, I would recommend taking public transportation. Otherwise, if you've driven around in the city and feel comfortable with it, I would just drive. It'll get you around faster than any public transportation. However, you'll be paying a little for parking.

The bart is surprisingly nice. I thought it would be really dirty, but even the stations are nice. I used to take it from Oakland to get into chicago, and it was cool, especially when you go under the water to get into SF.

Heh heh...San Francisco *is* gay town ;)

(Not that there's anything wrong with that of course)

In all seriousness, if you're flying into SFO, you're pretty much stuck taking the train into town unless you just grab one of the random shuttles hanging out by the baggage carousels...

Within downtown, the BART works pretty good but god help you if you want to get anywhere not on their line as the MUNI's nothing *too* exceptional...

I wish that would come true someday. I am interviewing at the medical school but its not for the regular medical school class. I got my rejection letter for that a long time ago. I'm interviewing for a 1 year post-baccalaureate program that will "help" me to get into med school the following year.

And I am not just lurking, I make almost 1 post a day!

Anyways, I am just about the worst person ever when it comes to directions. I get lost pretty easily. I really need help here from those of you who are familiar with the area.

Ok, my plan is to arrive in SF in the evening and then go to my interview in the morning the next day, then fly home later that day. What hotel/motel should I stay at? If you can provide a specific name for a hotel/motel it will really help.

The airport is nowhere near the city and UCSF. I would suggest renting a car from the airport and driving there. Probably still take you a good 30 minutes.

If you want to get to UCSF by MUNI, take the N-Judah toward the Sunset district from Civic Center or any of the BART/MUNI stations on Market Street in downtown S.F. The N-Judah is light rail and will get you to UCSF's doorstop in about 30 minutes from downtown. I did this for about 9 months while I was doing some research there.

I would rent a car and drive from LA. That would be much faster and cheaper! By the way, my nephew is interning at UCSF but he also floats around the other hospitals in the area, too!

Thanks McPhreak and everyone else, especially to yakko, who always has the most helpful things to say.

Umm...did I not mention that I am terrible with directions? I'll probably get lost if I drive and plus I'm too lazy to.

Any hotels/motels near UCSF that I can stay at?
