How does one get a DVD-RAM to work in Win2k?

Hi,
My apologies, this is somewhat long...

I have a Creative Labs DVD-RAM drive (1216S). It is a SCSI device and I belive is the same model as the Toshiba SD-W111.

This drive worked wonderfully under Win98SE but unfortunately neither Toshiba nor Creative support the drive under Win2k. The software upgrade (WriteDVD!) is available from Software Architects ($35) which is a %$#@! rip-off, but that is for a different forum.

Even worse, depite installing WriteDVD! for Win2k, only one drive letter is being assigned to the DVD-RAM - i.e. the DVD works fine, but I have no 'removable disk' letter for the read/write function.

The installation program opens a DOS window briefly, and I could read a message that flashed by that said something like 'device not found' - a bad sign, neh?

Running the 'hardware wizard' found nothing, so I went to install the driver manually under 'other devices' (nothing else seemed appropriate). Following the 'have disk' button proved to be an exercise in futility - I got a message, 'The specified location does not contain information about your hardware'. Well, yes it %$#@!ing does.

Reading the inf files (either saidvd0.sys or saidvd1.sys - they seem to be the same) both the Toshiba flavor and the Creative one are listed.

Having re-booted Win2k about 45 times during this process, I am throwing up my hands and asking, "Any advice?"

Thank you for your help!
