Other than reading ATOT or the news. I never had a car so bear with me ;) Do the dealerships contact you?

If you bother to keep places up to date, you'll get a mailing telling you of the recall. Of course if you choose not to let people know what car you have and where you live, then you won't get information this way.

Other methods: there are websites dedicated to all the recalls, magazines like Consumer Reports, newspapers, TV news, asking dealer/manufacturer, etc.

Jeep has been contacting me for some time about a transmission recall on my 93. I think I get a message every 6 months or so reminding me.

He's not trying to find out if there is a recall for a specific car, he is wondering how people generally find out there is a recall on their car.

Normally the manufacturer will contact you if they have your info.

There are recalls where they have to inform you, and there are recalls that aren't mandatory. When my Honda Civic was new (less than 1k miles), my tires were wearing rather badly, and my mechanic found out that there was a recall on the tires. So I took it in to the dealership to get them replaced. They had a recall on the tires but weren't obligated to tell owners. Guess it was a case by case situation.

Course the laws might have changed since then; it was 10 years ago that this happened.

Ford's website lets you enter your VIN and it will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls.

Thanks so much Captain Obvious! I could have never done it without you!

So you call the manufacturer every month? "Hey guys, did you have a recall on my car?"

Don't you have to register with the manufacturer if you buy a car? My brother always gets information about new cars from Land Rover.

same deal for ford, daily recalls. :)

if it's GM, there won't be a recall but your car is going to blow up in an accident and GM knows it and is saving up to pay for the legal fees on their next lawsuit.

if it's japanese, there will be stuff wrong with it, but no recall cause they won't want to admit it.

if it's mopar, it will break on the way to the dealer so there's no point in finding out.

if it's a BMW, there will be a 3 page list of "quirks" but you're not going to take it the dealer because you don't want to admit that your baby wasn't so well put together after all.

and so on.
