how does one buy new art pieces more directly

Any serious art collectors on here? How did you get your art works? I am pretty clueless on how to obtain art pieces. Most of my pieces are either from cruise art auctions, garage sale, or ebay. Recently I saw a few awesome pieces by a certain artist, and I've just found out that he is releasing some more new pieces later on. So how does one order these on the first day it is released? I just don't want to pay the secondary market/gallery markup prices.

In the past, I had bought a few pieces directly from the artists themselves. I would go to shows and speak with the artists and get something from their next collection of works, or something they had done previously but wasn't placed in a gallery. Always much cheaper in my experience.

the problem is this artist is already very famous, so its not like he is a straving artist that will pull a piece of work out his trunk and ask you how much you want to pay for it. Most of his older stuff are 'sold out' and you can only get it from an art gallery and pay probably 2-3x of what they paid, so I guess I want to be just like the gallery, to buy the piece the first day that it come out. I guess I need to talk to his publisher?
