How Does My New Computer Look?

clamum

Lifer
Getting a new computer and I am planning on ordering this off NewEgg:

- Epox 8RDA+ motherboard
- AMD XP 2400+ processor (retail w/ fan)
- Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM HD 8MB cache
- Keyboard
- Floppy and EIDE cables
- Lite On 52/52/24 CD-RW drive
- Foxconn ATX Super Case w/ 350W power supply
- 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM (Crucial)
- Asus V7100 PRO64 PURE 64MB Geforce 2 MX400

I got a cheap video card because I'm wating until after Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out to get a good one. Does the above look pretty good? 🙂

I'd get an XP2500... they overclock like a beast, don't cost much more than an XP2400, and the extra cache helps a lot in some applications.

*EDIT* You also will need more than 256 MB of RAM... 512 is the minimum I'd recommend for gaming. And you'll most likely want PC3200, not old, out dated PC2100.

i dunno wut ur budget is but lemme critique a few things---

epox is good many people like that u can stick with that
instead of an amd 2400 get a 2500 so that u can overclock it to a 3200 OR if u dont overclock do what i just did and get a 2600...the price difference between them is not very high i dont think
wait for a sunday ad in bestbuy or circuit city and u can pick up a 120 or 160 gig HDD for like 80 bucks after rebates...much better deal than a measly 40 giger
get ROUND floppy and eide cables they r much better
many people say liteons are very loud but if u dont care go for it (i have 1 and i dont care)
people will probably say the foxconn is aight but the power supply is bad and get a new 1 well u can do that but i dont think its neccesary
once again for the ram, wait for it in bestbuy or circuit city every week they run a good special u can get like 2700 512 stick for 60-70 after MIR
DO NOT GET THAT VIDEO CARD EVEN IF ITS JUST TEMPORARY...go for a gf4 ti4200...u can find them from 70-120 depending on brand and memory but if thats too much cash and u dont want any performance out of ur nice new computer go ahead and get NOT a gf2mx400 but a GF4 MX400 but i still say go for the ti4200 B/c halflife-2 will be playably decent with the ti4200 but HORRIBLE with gr2mx400 and thats only comin out in a few months i doubt that xtreme high performance cards will decrease in much price by then

hope this all helps and good luck

CDRWs and hard drives are overpriced at Newegg. You're better off getting one locally and waiting for a rebate. Ditch the 2400 and get a 2500. Price difference will be small, but a huge difference in overclocking potential. Crucial RAM = no, no on nForce2 boards. And pc2100 is a crime these days. At the least, you should be looking at HyperX pc2700.

What type (brand) of RAM do you recommend for the nForce2 boards? If I did get a 2500+, then I should get PC2700?

at least 2700

go with wut i said be4 u will be fine ESPECAILLY the video card thnig i emphasize gr8tly GET A GF4 TI4200!!!! so much better than gf2 mx400

i know this b/c i just upgraded from gf2 mx400 to gf4 ti4200 and there is SO MUCH of a diff it would be a shame for u to get gf2 mx400

PC2700.....or PC3200 ideally....I doubt there will be a huge difference in price...

Crucial RAM = no, no on nForce2 boards

Explain please... (running MSI K7N2 + PC3200 Crucial RAM + Overclocking 2500+ to 2800+)

- Epox 8RDA+ motherboard - - Good choice, pretty well any Nforce2 Board does the trick, I personally like the Soltek version, but this is good

- AMD XP 2400+ processor (retail w/ fan) - - Get the Barton 2500+, its not much more money at all, overclocks great and has 512kb cache, this is a must
- Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM HD 8MB cache - why not spend $15-20 more and get a 60-80 gb drive?
- Keyboard
- Floppy and EIDE cables
- Lite On 52/52/24 CD-RW drive good choice, but noisy from my experience....LG's are very smooth and quiet and never had any problems with
- Foxconn ATX Super Case w/ 350W power supply
- 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM (Crucial) recommend pc-2700, 512MB....256 will work ok but will need to upgrade down the road, just to let you know
- Asus V7100 PRO64 PURE 64MB Geforce 2 MX400 - if your spending $50 (i dont know what these cost anymore) on this, spend $60 and get a Radeon 9100 128MB, its at least twice as fast

I got a cheap video card because I'm wating until after Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out to get a good one. Does the above look pretty good? 🙂

haha of course there is a big difference...spend $10 more and get a Radeon 9100 even and it would be at least 2-3 times faster..

also you need a spell checker 🙂

every1 says spell checker i spell fine i just type fast and dont feel like checkin lol

screw that sry people

For your ram, get AT LEAST 512MB OF PC2700 - no exceptions. You'll be achin' later try to play HL2 on that other junk. Corsair is good for nForce2 boards. Just go to Epoxs' website and look at their memory compatability list.
Go with the 2500 like the other guys said. it will be better to get PC3200 Ram if you plan on using your boards 400MHZ FSB.... (you should 😉 )
And the video card thing - No. Get something a little better, your wasting your money with that. A 9100 like someone else said or higher. 9600Pro is real nice for the price...

this is true HOWEVER he wants to upgrade to top-of the line video card soon sooooooooo thats y im saying for now get gf4 ti4200 or comparitavly priced ati card (not 2 familiar with these)

Ok...

From what I gather it would be a good idea to get the XP 2500+. I was not interested in overclocking but if it works well with this processor, then why not? Heh.

Drop the PC2100 and get PC2700. Would the PC3200 be worth it? I think I'm sticking with 256MB (budget), I can always add more later.

Drop the HD and get a bigger one.

About the video card. All I want is something that will play Counter-Strike or GTA Vice City. I am on a budget and would like not to spend one more dime than is necessary. Later when Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out, I can look at how the current cards run those games and I will be able to make a better decision on the video card. Now I just need something to get by with, and I'm not much of a gamer anymore anyways (well, till Doom3 and HL2 arrive 😛)

doesnt matter

20 bucks is not a big difference get gf4 ti4200

but...if u really really dont wanna

AT LEAST get a gf4 mx400 instead of gf2

yeh explain please, i ran crucial ddr on my asus a7n8x deluxe for a long time with 0 problems

It looks good and looks like your going to get a fairly cheap price on all that but I have a few suggestions just like everyone else said...Get more ram! It is cheap! I couldn't tell you about your video card, I am not big on them. Upgrade that hard drive too....go for about 80GB or more. I guess it all depends on how you plan on using your machine. Good luck and have fun!

Now I have:

AMD XP 2500+ OEM
Speeze SuperRock 5T208B1H3 CPU Fan/Heatsink
Same motherboard (8RDA+)
256MB PC3200 RAM
Same case as before
Same CD-RW

I just need to get a hard drive but am wondering if there are any good deals on one. I don't need anything over probably 80GB unless it's a really good deal.

Also - would that be an ok fan/heatsink to get? It's says "AMD Recommended" up to XP 3000+.

good idea to change the processor, the FSB increase along with cache is great. if your not going to OC then i would move down to pc2700 ram. since you say your gonna play vice city, i would recomend 512 mb of ram. i used to play it on 256 and id was kinda choppy, but 512 made it better (this was on a 800 athlon with pc133 ram). as far as a video card goes, vice city ran fine on my 800 athlon with a AIW radeon in it...the OG radeon. i got decent graphics and it ran smother than GTA3 on my computer. check best buy and staples ads for HDs.

Aye why don't you just get a good video card, you are using big m's c.c. anyway. If you try and wait you will never get to a point where you really did get the fastest vid card for a good price, becuase it changes all the time. All the fastest vid cards now can prolly play all these games in 4x aa, very high res, it would be so drastically better than now.

I would probably try to skimp in another area and get 512mb ram. I bet it would be more important. Why needs a new keyboard?

yeah you'll definately need more than 40GB with the sizes of today's games...

when i first built my computer(beginning of 2001), i thought 10GB would be more than enough.. but it filled up so fast..
now my 80GB are on its knees... constantly running out of space.. needing to delete stuff that i want, for stuff i want even more!

get yourself at least 120GB... if not 80GB BARE MINIMUM
