Im currently in the process of building a new pc and i been thinking about a graphics card, currently i have a geforce 4 Ti 4200 64mb card, its a beutiful card, its a PNY got it from best buy for 70 bucks about a year ago, problem was my computer was no where near capable of using all the power of the card, it would bottleneck it badly and i didnt see a increase in performance at all with my games. I was wondering whether i should just put this in my new comp and see how it does or should i get a new one, i was reading the stats and comparing them to my card and it seems the FX and PCX cards are less powerful then the one i have? the fill rate and other stats they give you are better on the geforce4 what is up with that, is it really better then these newer cards? the only card i noticed was faster was the new 6600 and 6800 series for the geforce6. What should i do?

Get yourself a 6800 GT. :p

Or wait until the PCIe versions come out, if you go that route in your new system. The 6600GTs debute in PCIe as well.

doesnt the motherboard have to support pcie? and im just realizing now how much of a steal that was from best buy for 70 bucks, my friend ran over to my house early one sunday morning and said he read about a price mixup at bestbuy for that card, that the computers would ring it up that cheap plus you had mail in rebates lol we went over and bought 2 of them that morning, im lookin up prices right now for the card i have and i dont see anything lower then 79 dollars and most of the name brand ones like PNY (the one i bought) are over 100 bucks lol

I honestly think GF4's are still relevant. I put my old 128 4200 back in my rig after having minor issues wiht my 9700, and after dropping the res to 800x600, it played d3 just as fast as my 9700 at 1024x768. If I hadn't known that the res was different, it would have been tough for me to tell the difference visually. If you keep AA/AF off, at 1024x768 or below, the GF4's are pretty awesome cards for the $$$$$.

I have a Ti4200 64MB(in second gaming rig), then went to a 9600pro, now I've a 9800pro in my main gaming rig. Don't know what you're upgrading to, But:

There's a BIG jump in performance to the 9800 pro!

Don't know what games you play, but if it's gonna be Fra Cry or Doom 3, I suggest at least a 9800 pro. Might as well try the Ti4200 in your new rig though. Then, if not happy upgrade. If your getting top of the line, like AMD 64 etc and can afford, the newer generation like a 6800GT or even a 6600GT (when they come out) might be better.

Basically, try it and see first.

BTW, I chose a Ti4200 with 64MB cuz they did seem to perform better than the 128MB versions. Gotta watch the vid card ram marketing hype. There are many cards that perform better with the smaller amounts of vid ram. (1) the larger ram is often slower than the smaller ram and (2) many times the GPU just can't utilize the larger ram better.

^^^^^ sooooo true like those uninformed people that buy 9600's with 256 megs of ram that think its gonna make a difference.

At your price point, the 9800 Pro will be a HUGE improvement. I personally upgraded to a 6800 GT and gave my 9800 Pro to a friend who is very, very grateful because he can now play games that he couldn't before because he swapped out his Ti4200.

I would recommend a 200 dollar 6600GT instead of a 9800pro.

But nobody knows when they will be available, so you can't choose this as an option right now, unless you're willing to wait for atleast 15-30 days.
Can you tell us what is your upcoming system? And what was your old system so we can advice you on what to do?

He will probably be waiting and waiting for an AGP version of the 6600GT. If he were buying a new PCI-E motherboard right now, I'd agree with you, but if you want a card now, the 6600GT is not available, and the AGP version is set to come out a month after the PCI-E version.

The problem with the GeForce 4 series (aside from the total lack of DirectX9 support, which pretty much kills its value as a 'new' card right there) is that they are horrendous at Anisotropic Filtering (AF), so you can't play games like Doom3 at high quality because the 8x AF turned on there just murders performance (I think the GF4's only go up to 4xAF as well.. correct me if I'm wrong).

I ran no less than three GeForce 4's in my machine and loved them all in their time (Ti 4200 64MB, Ti4200 128MB and Ti4800 (not the slower SE either :) ). After upgrading to a 9800 Pro, the 9800 Pro smacked down the GF4, especially with AA/AF.

Games like Halo, etc (DX9 games) look much better with the 9800 Pro as well...

I have the G 4 Ti 4200 128 meg. I am playing Doom 3 on this right now , but I have to play it on 640x480 for it to be real smooth(I am a stickler for smooth). It does not handle AA/AF very good (well not at all really) . I am looking at upgrading my card now. The Ti served me well but it is time to move on. I agree with the guy that said try it in your new machine and then if you don't like it upgrade.

By today's standards, the Ti4200 is a low end card. Sub value segment. Still a great card for 2-3 year old games.
