How does mileage affect overall car state of the car?

The car i have in mind is Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder with 2.0L 210hp engine and i'd like to know several things. Basically, i need to know how big of a difference mileage makes. Is it a good idea to pay a 20% extra for a car that has 40K miles instead of, say 65K? And what's the average lifetime of a car like that? How many miles can it go before it basically dies? How many miles before maintenance becomes really expensive? I'd also like to see some kind of a table with different mileage figures and a car's state at that mileage, i.e. 20,000 miles - like new, 60,000 miles - paint starts fading, minor maintenance costs, 150,000 miles - major maintenance required, etc.

There's so many factors it's impossible to say a cut and dry answer. Depends on if the car was maticulously well kept, stop and go city driving, highway miles, how many years those miles have been racked up on, the weather conditions, etc etc.

Go to your library and check out the NADA or equivalent book which *dealers* use to determin car value. You will see the effect of milage on price.
One mileage maintenance consideration is when the timing belt/s need to be changed. This can cost , so check into whether or not it has been done.

Generally, 15,000 miles a year is considered average. Anything above or below that will alter the resale value of the vehicle. 20% increase in price for the mileage difference given is on the high side. I would recommend going Edmunds.com and calculating the estimated worth of the vehicle.

In terms of vehicle reliability - that's a sketchy subject. Anything anybody tells you will either be a blind guess or just some second hand information based on a "friend of a friend" that owns that vehicle.

On any vehicle, you should never have worry about major repairs until 80-100,000 miles. Some will have major issues long before 100,000 miles, while other cars won't have any major issues until long after. As always, your mileage will vary (pun intended).
