How does long distance work?

I'm curious. How does a long distance call (overseas) work? Is it through satellite or is there an actual phone line runing overseas? How long have we had overseas long distance?

I think there was also a copper(?) cable run between the US and England in the mid 1950s.
There was radio-telephone service even before that.
