How does lan manager detect Token Ring cards in promiscuous-mode?

To me it would seem the card can simply choose to actually read each packet that passes its way on the ring, rather than discard the packets not meant for it. Sounds entirely passive to me. Does the card then also respond to a polling from LNM as to its status?

I believe it just keeps track of what addresses fly by during ring polls and elections.

The NIC wouldn't do anything but pass the addresses up the stack (some application actually has to do the tracking). Normal mode is keeping track of the current Nearest Upstream neighbor and (maybe)nearest downstream neighbor.

It's been a while since I played Token-Ring....I could be wrong.

FWIW
