How does iTunes' Genius Just For You work?

Lately every list of 10 recommendations seems to have a song by a certain artist. I'm wondering if that his record label is paying money to get him listed? He hasn't had any new albums since August (an EP) and a real album hasn't been released since Feb of 08. Even so, he keeps popping up, and it's many different songs.

Mike Doughtry is the artist, btw. I do enjoy his music, at least 😉

On topic: does the genius software base its selections on the number of times you play that music? Maybe you listen to Mike Doughtry a lot, so it keeps picking it, so you keep listening to it, etc ...

sweet, quoted for future reference

Its pretty good for me, though I think Pandora is a bit smarter with its recommendations.

It sucks. I used to use the Shuffle feature on my iPhone a lot, but coincidentally (or not), it started sucking so badly right after Genius was released that I wonder if it wasn't done deliberately to drive people to use Genius. 😛 The difference between Genius and Shuffle now is about on par with shooting yourself in the left foot or the right foot. 😛
