How does high school sports crediting work?

Hello, I've been doing a lot of sports this year in the school trying to boost my extracuricular activities. However, someone told me that if you do JV sports they won't mean anything when you are applying to college. Do colleges really care if you are GOOD at a sport or that you played a sport? He said that you get a varsity letter which is a letter you put in your college transcript. Can anyone clarify this? I already did two JV sports, but if colleges won't see that I've actually been doing something outside of school it seems like a waste of time. THANKS

they really dont care about sports period unless you're going to play for them

And if you couldn't make your high school varsity team, then you probably wont make their team either. Unless its Michael Jordan, but eventually he played varsity too.

edit: not to say it's completely worthless. Obviously anything on the application that involves working with other people and developing a skill has some merit. But don't expect it to have the same impact as a 1600 SAT

quoted for truth

I was always under the impression they were looking for the well rounded student, good academics, extracurricular activites and sports. I know I will never play collegiate sports. So how do they know if you did sports or not while you were in high school?
