How does Halflife work?

I mean, in terms of a CD-Key, etc? I have a friend that wants to try it before he buys it...he'd like to play against me. I have the CD and everything, and was wondering if we could play against each other, or if he'd have to get a copy of it separately.

I dont beleive cdkeygens dont work for HL, kinda like gens for Starcraft.
