hair actually grows for a short while after death, so apparently it doesn't know when to stop.

Change 'writing an essay' to 'browsing porn' and 'arm' to 'nut'.

The hair on your arms grows extremely slow... Shave a patch off your arm and you'll see...

I'll take your word for it. :)

Hair is in a constant state of growth. The reason why it seems to "stop" at certain lengths is because it becomes too brittle after awhile. Sometimes, it cannot even support its own length. While some people's hair is more durable than others, no hair can last forever. The durability of hair is also why you can see other people grow their hair to extreamly long lengths.

In short, no, it does not know when to stop.

Hair grows until it reaches its stopping point, which varies from person to person and from one part of the body to the other (your scalp hair can obviously grow a lot longer than your arm hair, and women tend to be able to grow their scalp hair longer than men). Once it's reached the stopping point, it stays there for a while until it falls out, at which point a new hair starts growing from the same follicle. In fact, the new hair has already started growing by the time the old hair has fallen out.

first thing I found on google, but I've read about this before

there's more info here, click "Hair Biology" on the right

BTW I do that staring-at-the-arm-hairs thing all the damn time..... and I've get a lot of ingrown ones too. That's what I always do when I'm procrastinating on homework, search my arms for ingrown hairs :p

Agree to above statement. Also, hair does not grown after death. That is just an urban legend. Cadavers are shaved before they are shipped out to schools and sometimes when they arrive, they have what looks likes fuzz when the hiar had been shaved skin close. The illusion is that as the cadaver starts to lose water content in the skin, the skin pulls back a little, thus now allowing more hair to be exposed.
