How does defragmenting affect your gaming?

So I was cleaning up my drives, and had to delete about 40GB of music, video and game files, when I decided to defragment. I was curious as to how this would affect my game performance. So I ran 3dMark01 and 03, though I assumed that these scores would not change since I always thought they did not represent my ability to play a game in the first place. I was right. But in Doom 3, I went from 46fps to 47.1fps with my Radeon 9800Pro 256MB at 410/360. At stock, 378/337, I went from 42fps to 42.8fps.

Should this slight increase be consistent as long as I do not add significant amounts of files to my harddrive? I realize it's minimal, but I'm just curious. I ran the timedemo a dozen times in a row, and the results were consistent.
