How does certified/registered mail work?

Someone sent me something via certified registered mail.

I was not here the day before yesterday, and a slip was left.

I signed the slip and left it on my doorstep. But the mailman never came up to my doorstep.

Was I supposed to put the slip back in the mailbox?

I don't understand why he didn't try and deliver the package again yesterday.

It says signature is required, and signing it and telling them to leave it on my doorstep doesen't matter if signature is required, but I did it anyway.. but as far as I can tell, he never came.

Our other mail was delivered...

You have to be physically there and you are the only person that can sign for it.

I've sent stuff by certified mail before, and that's exactly how it works. When you get the letter/package, you have to sign the slip and return it to the original sender so they know you got it.
