How does Bittorrent work?

I've heard that bittorrent works better the more you upload, and I was wondering, is this true?
Like I know some players let you restrict the upload speed. But I heard that if you do this, it will end up slowing down your downloads, is this true? Does it matter what client you use or does this happen with all clients?

I use the original bittorrent player version 3.4 (so that i can have multiple downloads going at once, i think they took that away in version 4!)
and I upload way more than i download usually. like usually it ends up being that i upload 2 times as much as i download, which sucks, cuz it hogs all my bandwidth 🙁

Also how does the whole seeding and leeching thing work, when u see that listed on torrent file sites? Does Seeder mean they are done downloading the program and now they are seeding it?
Technically everyone is seeding while they are downloading (if they use the default settings) so does the seeders # include everyone who is seeding or only those who have completed the file?

thats weird how on bittorrent.com they said that it does matter though.
you are gettin blazing download rates! My internet connection is that fast but i rarely get download rates on bittorrent that good 🙁

how about downloading multiple files at once? what are your personal experiences with doing that? bittorrent.com says its less efficient, but i question that.

Azureus doesn't seem to matter w/ upload rates though. i've used it w/ little upload and still decent d/ls

It's not the BT client that cares about your share ratio, it's the trackers. Especially private trackers. So yes, it often does have a bearing.

the original client claimed that your upload speed affected your download speed. some other people then got rid of the limitation.

with all the effort you all put in to make those links, you could have just explained it in words.

I tried the original BitTorrent client and with the latest version you can do multiple downloads but you have to manually start them. I got some random download speeds with original client but I've had pretty good luck with BitComet. Never tried any other clients.

Seeders already have the file and are just uploading and Leechers are doing both.

did you have much luck with the newer bittorrent client, or did u not really use that one much?

i downloaded bitcomet, but now i have to figure out how to use this dang thing, lol.

I used the latest BT client for a few weeks and was able to get much faster connections with bit comet (even on the same torrents). Bit comet is easy if you can post here you can figure it out

like others said its entirely dependent on teh tracker, most of the ones i use even thr privite ones dont care, they just want you to keep your share ratio up, i can dl torrents at 600k/s while uploading at 2k/s i then just seed them for a longer period of time, i think the fastest ive had one go is 700k/s, im on comcast 6.0/384, ive often have 6+ torrents all running at at least 60k/s, usially with a bunch that are well seeded they will all average 80-100

thanks for the help guys.

Im running bitcomet right now, and I'm noticing a world of a difference! Before I was probably getting a total of 40 kb a sec (for downloading 6 files simultaneously) Now I'm averaging over 100! and you guys were right, this thing is pretty easy to figure out, and setting your max upload speed is sweet.
