How does "backordering" of domains work with so many backordering companies?

Lets say I want to backorder "website.com"

If I backorder at godaddy.com and someone else backorders at snapnames.com what determines who gets it?

They don't?! :Q Holy jeez. They're the experts too! :Q

That's like asking a neurologist what your chances are of survival after tumor removal. When he shrugs and says "I dunno" you go grab a bunch of morons from the hospital gift shop and ask them. 😛

How does 'backordering' work?

It doesn't...except for the company that you pay for the service.

The short form is that you pay them a fee, and then when the domain comes up, they do nothing and it gets registered by some random domains-for-sale company. After a year, you have the opportunity to pay them another fee, for which they'll also do nothing.
