How does anime work in Japan?

I mean things like.. who watches it, when does it air, how common is it on TV, etc.

All I know about it is that I watch what shows I want to watch and the general public looks down on it because it is a cartoon, even though some of it is more complex, serious then any episode of Friends.

Anyway, is it on TV there in the way sitcoms are on tv here? Do most people watch it or is it limited to kids?

Yeah, except the protagonist is on either the giving or receiving end of some tentacle sex.

I think you're mistaken there. That stuff's on the premium channels. Like HBO.

Edit: Where do you think HBO got the title "Sex in the City"?

Umm, people?

when does it air

It's limited to either night or day..........

Seriously, most of the popular anime series here in the US (Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Initial D, Naruto) are/were all primetime series.

Do most people watch it or is it limited to kids?

Evangelion was the most watched show the year it aired IIRC and Initial D was also one of the most watched shows it's debut year (can't remember the # but it was top 5).

So then pretty much everyone watches it then, right? I guess with the lack or respect anime gets here its a hard thing to understand!

It's more of the fact that they're cartoons. Very few cartoons have managed to break into adult viewing habits because they're all viewed as for kids only.

Yeah, but over there, they are not viewed as just cartoons, right? They are seen as more of a thing for all ages?

Thats the thing I am trying to figure out.. if they are just a kid thing or if everyone from kids to adults watch them and the adults dont have to try to explain to people that they are not simply things for kids.

So what kind of shows are on that are NOT anime? Do they have lame sitcoms like we in the USA? And when did Takeshi's Castle come on - in prime time? God I love that show on SpikeTV!!! Helped me to realize that not all Japanese women were Babes - 90% are just as ugly as ours.

Hahah!!! Thats what I try to tell all my friends. Even the asian ones who have more exposure and should know better. THey all think that all japanese girls/women are cute/hot/horny/schoolgirl/executive b1tches.

You can probably understand the lack of respect from the responses in this thread ... a lot of people picture anime as very violent and graphic and filled with tentatcle scenes ... but if these people actually watched watch 2-3 different anime they'll understand why it's so popular in Japan ...

It depends on the anime.

If a guy in Japan was watching, say Pokemon, then yes people will look at him funny. But if he was watching BlackJack or a Gibli movie then it's not as strange. However, that being said, if you have lots of anime and that's all you watch, you are an otaku.

As far as Japanese tv shows go, it's the same as in the US. Mix of sitcoms, reality shows, game shows, anime, music shows, travel shows, etc etc etc.
