How does an xp XP 2800+ compare to the P4 2.8C and the 2.8E besides encoding?

If the performance is close between them, maybe i'll just save some money by getting the xp instead.

The XP series PR ratings are less accurate vs P4's at the high end. Most people agree that bartons and tbreds rated 2400+ and higher do not perform on the same level as P4's clocked at similar pr speeds.

2500+ is roughly equal to a 2.4 P4
2800+ = 2.53/2.66 P4
3000+ = 2.66/2.8 P4
3200+ = 2.8/3.0 P4

TBH it's not as simple as that, in most benches, one brand usually dominates the other ie a 2.4 P4 will beat a 3200+ in some benches while a 2500+ will beat a 3.0 in others.

Search sites like anand and toms for benchs, there are plenty, well maybe not toms they work in an intel office but there's plenty of other sites. What I'd go by if I was you is money. Price/performance-wise the two companies are lined up pretty evenly at the high end. Below the 2.4ghz P4 AMD's procs become a better value but above that point, xxx dollars of intel vs xxx dollars of amd buys similar performance. Use this method and you can disregard AMD's PR ratings.

you would be hard pressed to notice the difference in things like gaming :)
but i do mostly agree with the above post
800fsb and HT kinda tipped the scale in favor of the P4 northwood/prescott giving it that extra little muscle. If the bartons were running at the same speed as the former t-breds with the same model number then it would look better :)

What ever you do stay away from these early prescotts....IN ecnoding they do well (in some apps) but in most things they don't equal a 2.8c northwood as it suffers from the 150% longer pipeline....Maybe the prescotts in their 755 incarnation and 3.8ghz will be something but right now I thing they forced a shotty product to market....I think they are crap!!!

Isn't this been like a few threads for you now asking out opinion??? We (the majortiy of reponses) have said P4 everytime....I don't know how we can say it more which makes me think you really want to hear AMD is better fr this option....

You know what??? Get whatever you want.....It really doesn't matter to us. If you like AMD, feel comfortable with them, or even support the notion of helping the little guy defeat the "darkside" then just get a Barton 2800+ or a 2800+ A64.....

Dont waste you money on a regular athlon. They won't overclock very well and thier PR rating is total lie once the P4C's came around. If you want ~2.8C performance I think you should get a Mobile XP and go for 2300Mhz, ie real 2800+, which is rather possible even on the $77 AMD mobile 2400+. And trivial on the AMD moblie 2500+. If you're not going to overclock get the 2.8C or a A64 2800+, they are about equal in both performance and price.
