How does a video card affect DVD playback performance?

I recently tried hooking up my old Mac Cube to my projector via VGA. It blew away my Pioneer DVD player. However, it only has a 16mb ATI Rage 128 Pro 2x AGP card in it. Does the video card affect how good the DVD picture is at all? I'm wondering if I could get even more improvement with a better card. The new Mac Minis have 32mb Radeon 9200 video cards with DVI out. I'm sure that a DVI connection would offer even better quality for my projector, but would the video card help too?

Yes it can effect DVD playback, especially with those cards, the newer cards now offer some upconversion ability to HD.
