When sunlight hits the windshield doesn't most of the light gets turn into heat? If that's true and the sun screen being behind the glass, how is it helping to stop the heat buildup? Or am I mistaken?

Think radient barrier. Thats why the silve looking ones usually work better.
Radient barrier can also be installed in your house to help with the same thing. Ever notice that candy bars, pop tarts, etc.. have the silver like wrapper, same thing.
