How does a single dual-core CPU compare to 2x single core CPU's?

I read that article last night and I didn't see anything comparing a dual-core and a system with 2 physical CPU's. (the type of system you would typically think of when you think of SMP systems.)

I think it might be pretty hard to compare, really. I mean there's a lot of variants such as memory link architecture, length of traces between individual processors vs being built-in, and also how much bandwidth is available per core or processor.

I don't think anyone can really answer that until the dual-core systems are finalized, analyzed, and reviewed thoroughly. Not to forget, also build a dual physical CPU system that might be relatively close. How would a P4 EE stack against a Xeon? Itanium 64?

I would imagine a real dual Opteron would smoke a Toledo chip in some applications because it would have twice the available memory bandwidth.

Duallies will really win when you put two dual-core chips in them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander!

I think the AMD dual core will be like ribbon13 stated.... Howver it will be closer then Intel's offering to a true dual cpu system (in this case opterons) because it does not have a shared memory bus....This is really hampering the INtel dual core...Look at review listed above and Hardocp for commentary....

Edited: because it was unreadable...thanks for pointing that out elecrzy!!!
