How does a router work as a hardware firewall?

I've been told to get the LInksys router to serve as a very good firewall. I'm curious though how it works. Can anyone shed some light on the topic for me? Also, can I run something like Zone Alarm at the same time. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have no clue 😱 I've heard of hardware firewalls, but as to how they work, maybe the people at the Networking forum can help you out better than the OT people can. 🙂

Technically it's not a firewall, however many firewalls do use NAT along with the other filtering and inspection techniques, so it's not false advertising for the router's to say they have firewall capabilities. Plus, I think some of the newer routers do have some stateful inspection or other firewall capabilities built in.
