how does a PPPOE router work

hmmm my dsl service uses pppoe service to logon to my dsl 🙁 now.. if i get a router with pppoe, i install software that uploads info to the router with my logon and pass for ameritech? then it logs on software independent after that? and anything i plug into it will just see an always on connection?

Im no expert as I just installed my Linksys DSL 4 port router.

Got all 3 of my pcs on one connection.

Router is logged onto my ISP with my username & password.
And I have it set to PPPOE & KEEP CONNECTION ALIVE. (you can set it to connect on demand)

Configed all 3 pcs to obtain an IP adress automatically.

Plugged them into router.

Router assinged an Ip address to each pc.

Now all i need to do is open IE on any pc & im online instantly. (cuz my router is set to a constant connection)
No need to install any software on pcs, its a direct link from your Ethernet card to the router.

ISP only sees the single connection from router.

Its much easier than it sounds.

Im currently adding my xbox to my 4th port. 😉
 
By using the router, you don't need to use the PPPOE software anymore. The router has the PPPOE software built into it. So instead of using the login software everytime you want to go onto the net, the router will automatically log in for you.

thats actually my biggest question/reason 😀 so i can online game with a ps2 or xbox... btw... i only have one ip... it will still work wont it? or will i just have to read the instructions? 😀

The Xbox itself does not need an IP address, so you do not need to worry about extra IPs or broadband sharing devices (unless you are already using one). In general, you just need the computer to be on the same network as the Xbox.

BTW: I didnt configure squat, xbox was recognized on my network by my Linksys router as soon as I plugged the link cable from xbox into port4 on the back of the router.

Im using standard Cat5 ethernetcabe its same thing as an xbox link cable.
