How does a P4 2.80 GHz compare to a Celeron 2.8 GHz (in a laptop)? Will there be any noticable difference? She wouldn't do anything more complex than a small spreadsheet or word document or powerpoint presentation, and check email. Should she spend the $100 on a P4, or is a celeron really good enough?

Go for the Celeron. I bought a Dell laptop for a friend, it had a Celeron 2ghz or something. Worked great for him, college student, writing papers, downloading mp3s, watching dvds, etc...

Great, thanks. She's on an old 300 MHz PII currently, so anything would be an improvement :). I'll save her the $100 with the celeron.

LOL! That'll be one hell of an upgrade!

She can use the $100 to buy a nice laptop bag, or maybe an external mouse/keyboard for it. Maybe some headphones or speakers too.

Wife had been bugging me to get her a laptop so I bought her a toshiba s121 with celeron 2.8s back in June. For basic stuff like you mentioned it is fine (haven't tried powerpoint yet); olders games like icewind dale2 play decent as well.

Biggest complaint so far is very slow boot up time; celeron gets some blame for that but also slower hd and tons of pre-loaded crap toshiba installed.
