How does a motherboard become DEAD?

Hello, recently my motherboard died and I am trying to figure out what could have caused it that way it won't happen again. The motherboard I had is a DFI LanParty SLI, my brother thinks that it could be the power supply which is an enermax 565p. What do you guys think causes motherboards to become dead?

Reset the CMOS and install a known good power supply.

With the high voltage jumper (JP17) enabled, you can trip the power supply. This then causes the supply to go dead for some period of time and then you can try again. So the fix is to set the JP17 to low voltage and all the standby power jumpers for USB and PS/2 back to their defaults.

ah hrm, i see. But the main reason why motherboards go dead is because of the power supply failure right?

well no its one reason, and its a common one. If you can't post it could be any number of things. Take out the cmos battery and wait a minute then put it back in and see what happens and use the advice given above. If it still does not post with another PS and if you have the components start swapping out the CPU and memory and see if it posts. Maybe your CPU is dead or the memory..Its hard to say unless you experiment to find the reason.

yeah, well i did replace the cpu and got a new motherboard. Its coming in today, but I'm afraid that if its the PSU that caused my previous motherboard to go dead then it might kill my new one. So I just want to make sure. Maybe this couold help, but before my motherboard died. Sometimes I would hit the power button and nothing will go on the screen. Couple tries and it would finally boot up. Not sure what that means, but could be an indication that my PSU is going bad. What do you guys think?

Could be the PSU...best way to check is to plug a new one in and see if the problem goes away. Another reason mobos die is overclocking, though my guess is it takes a few years of constantly running overclocked for any damage to start occurring. The more you push your mobo past specs, the more heat is generated by the typical Northbridge and Southbridge. Heat translates to accelerated wear.

What kind of PSU? Do you have a spare you can test with?

I don't have a spare to test it with... The psu i have is an enermax EG565P-VE FMA PSU, its 535 watts, 2.0. I really don't want to buy another PSU unless it is necessary. But wouldn't what i wrote in my previous post kind of be an indication that my PSU has problems powering up the comp?

Borrow the parts then.

It should be apparent that we are suggesting that you isolate the problem before you start with a new motherboard. Maybe it is the motherboard, but maybe it is something else.
