How does a company know the names of residences on my building?

Apparently I was stupid and didn't include my apt number in a recent order, so this guy calls me up and tells me so.. which I thought was really great.

Since my last name is the most common Vietnamese last name out there he said that there were several in the building (of just ~50 apt buildings).

He then asked if we were all related

My question is how can he have a list of resident names in the building (it's a University building)? Did he call the University or something to verify or somtehing?

Could it be because ... someone else from that address ordered from that company? For example, I bet in my dorm building (freshman year, 8 floors, 50 to a floor), I was not the only person who ordered from Amazon.com

I ordered from discount-electronic.com.

To have someone in this building order something from there is a major coincedence enough, but to have them have my last name..common as it is, seems very unusual.

Reverse phone directory perhaps? Do you have a phone there in your name?

I'd assume that the information came from the same building directory that the US Postal Service uses.

Gee, maybe you should just thank the university staff person who tried to help the delivery guy get your package to you after you were too [something] to include a complete address. Or thank the delivery person who thought you might really like to have your package and asked the building super for more information, and then called you, probably from his personal cell phone, instead of giving up and sending it back due to an incomplete address. Maybe instead of getting pissed off that "someone" knows that there are several Vangs, Nguyens or Xiongs in your building, you should be happy that you got your package despite your demonstrated incompetence at ordering something for delivery.

Just a thought about which battles are worth fighting.
