How does a civilian get government Security Clearances?

You can not apply for a security clearance unless its for a job that requires one. So the only way would be to apply through a job. You can not do it stand alone. Similar to keeping whatever security clearance you might have. You cant just "renew" the clearance unless you retain a job which it is a part of. Like if i left the military and went unemployed while going to school for a few years, I'd lose mine.

Get a job that requires it and will pay for it.... if a job asks for someone who already has a clearance, you're out of luck

I heard the highest security clearance costs up to 500k since they have to fly to your home country to interview your relatives and more. :D

Once you get it, finding a job won't be too tough. Companies are cheap and they don't want to pay for your security clearance.
