How does a cable modem work?

I understand how the signal can be sent to the computer but how do I send information back? Never had a cable modem and was thinking about getting that or DSL. Currently have good ole 56k. Which is better?

It sends information back the same way it receives it. 2-way communications via your cable line.

DSL vs Cable depends on your area. In some places, Cable service sucks in others it rocks. Same with DSL. Check out DSLReports and see if they have any info for your area.
