I am currently using a BFG8800GT 512 OC version. I saw the 4850 and 4870 are on sale on best buy this weekend and thwe price seems pretty tempting. I want to know just around how much better are those card compare to my 8800gtoc

Hm, there aren't really any games to make use of it, I was planning on waiting till next gen or possibly thereafter to upgrade...and I'm playing at 1920x1200.

only one worth while is the 4870. I would get a GTX 260 instead though....they are on par with a 4870 and overclock much higher, have physx support, better drivers, and cooler temps. I've ran my card @ 725/1450/1200. I just use 666/1450/1200 for daily use which is a massive oc.

Well, a 4870 can stay very cool, way cooler then your GTX 260 if you crank the fan speed enough ( the GPU is half the size of yours ), it has directX 10.1 support and overclocks to 800+ or more the core. Oh...and it's cheaper then the GTX.

So, really , I don't see that GTX 260 being "the one to get" over the 4870. They are both good cards and offer the same performance. The drivers for the ATI card can suck sometimes, so I have to agree with you on that.

For the OP, 8800 GT is old and starting to die in very intensive games ( Crysis Warhead, Stalker Clear Sky and probably the next big titles that are to be released). A 4850 will be better like 15-20% then the 8800 GT, but a major improvement will surely be a 4870 or GTX 260 if is priced the same.

I disagree with that. I've had more trouble with NVidia drivers than ATI drivers and my last 3 cards have been nVidia cards.

Nvidia has better drivers?

Not that it matters (OMG! Your GPU is at 80C, mine is at 70C, that makes mine better!) but you can raise the fan speed on the 4870 which makes it run much cooler if the temps bug you.

Nvidia's big advantage is their board makers. I've owned an EVGA card in the past and loved it. All the extras that Nvidia partners provide is really the big positive for Nvidia in my opinion. Everything else you said, not so much.

You forgot to mention that they are quite a bit longer. Might be a tight fit in some cases.

stick with the 8800gt, but if you must upgrade, sell that thing for as much as you can get out of it and get a gtx260 and overclock it like its going out of style. nvidia has much better board partners, the card ocs better, runs cooler, isnt as loud, roughly same price as 4870. only reason to go 4870 is if you have xfire mobo and want 2 of those bad boys, or if the 4870 outperforms the 260 in a specific game you play alot.
