Anyone know a good site or something with instructions? I got my first snowboard yesterday, and I guess I have to wax it before going to Tahoe on Saturday. thanks a lot :)

just buy some wax and melt a bunch of it on the base. Then run a hot iron over it. Once it dries, scrape off the excess wax until you have a nice smooth finish.

BTW, if this is your first time snowboarding, wax/no wax aint gonna matter. You'll be on your ass all day long

this may seem a bit silly, but could you just rub it down with wax paper? I'm gonna try it with my kid's sled :)

ain't that the truth. you'll be more worried trying to balance yourself then going downhill.

Man, if i were you, id go to a local shop near the mountain and bullshit with the guy working if they arent busy and see what kind of deal he will give you.
I have done this everytime i got mine waxed and not only did i get a good wax job cheap, i got some goodies for the mountain. :D

Take it to Sport Chalet or your local boardshop... regular waxing should cost you no more than $15, and it's a lot less trouble too. I used to wax my snowboard myself, and the scraping was a huge PITA.

How cheap are you talking? Wax only costs maybe $1.50. I wouldn't pay some guy $15 when its not very hard to do yourself.

Okay, well if you start waxing your board yourself, you basically have to throw away an iron, because you'll never use it to iron clothes again. I get my board waxed about twice per season, so for me it's worth not having to deal with scraping the wax off and also cleaning up all the wax shavings.

Take it to a pro shop and ask them to wax it while you watch.

...you know, I thought about how to phrase the above statement and no matter how I tried I couldn't help thinking the statement was rather kinky...so I apologize in advance.

good wax and and a good board wax iron will cost you at least $50.

I used to work at a ski/board shop and repaired ski's and snowboards in my early college days (about 8 years ago).

Waxing isn't hard to do but there are specific things to pay attention to.

Rubbing wax paper does jack sh1t...don't even bother waxing at all. The whole idea with waxing ski's or a snowboard to have a really smoth bottom surface (fill in knicks and whatnot) and to have a mildly hydrophobic surface...both reduce friction.

I hardly ever wax my ski's or snowboard...I'm not that good and am not dying for that 2 mph down the mountain. I used to re-surface my ski's and fix gouges, etc. before every season.

Just go to a yard sale and buy a $5 - $10 iron. Go to your local ski store and buy some all weather / conditions wax. One block of it should last most of a season.

Turn the snowboard upside down, heat iron. Slowly melt wax on iron, dripping it onto the board. You don't need that much wax, so be sparing. Once you have finished dripping, run the iron over the board, until the entire thing is waxed. Wait for it to cool. Once it has finished cooling off scrape off the excess with a piece of plexiglass. Congrats, you have waxed your first snowboard for $15 dollars.

You can also rub regular wax you buy at the store (it's called Gulf Wax here anyways) and buff it with a rag, works alright. Definately not as smooth of a finish as hot waxing but it's easy and cheap.

the price of an iron and wax hardly makes it worth the time. stores to it for $10.

Buy your equipment at ski stop and you get a lifetime of waxing and sharpening for free.

If you just got it, it might be ready to go.
Some new boards come pre-waxed

When you are done scraping the extra wax off, hit it with a plastic scouring pad, to really buff it up.
If you really get into riding, buy a waxing iron and tool kit, I find waxing my snowboard a good way to get psyched for a day of snowboarding.
