your computer is a progressive DVD player. Simply get one of the most popular dvd decoder (PowerDVD, WinDVD, Nvidia PureVideo........)

480 Progressive is NOT high definition. You can however make your DVDs look better with a powerful CPU and the software "ffdshow".

Whole bunch more ffdshow settings

It's worth taking a look at. The thing to remember is to play around with the settings. Thing to remember is it's not in stone. Once I figured out how to get everything running it took me an hour to figure out which picture I thought looked the best and with what settings.

Example:
ST has the Blur and NR and the Sharpening before the resize. I prefer to have the sharpening after the resize using the unsharpen mask. But thats just me. Also, when using the resize, make sure to use a Parameter that has smooth playback. Just like ST, I had to back off to a parameter of 4 in order to get smooth playback.

yup all the settings are very subjective to YOUR TV / Monitor and YOUR EYES, so you will have to tweak accordingly!

Wizboy, i believe you have the x1900...have you done an A to B comparison of FFDSHOW vs. AVIVO? Just curious how different they look...

Try clicking on the Rig link in sig. I have 2x7900GT's. They were really cheap thanks to the step up, and the voltmod just made it even better :). (wait, plus it says in my sig 2 new 7900GT's in SLI, do you need some glasses ;) :p)

Maby I can try comparing Nvidia Decoder (Purevideo) vs something else. I'm not really sure how to get the side to side screen shots though, or even what program to use to do it. But I'd sure like to test different settings in ffdshow and compare them.

Edit: Also, I find myself changeing some of the settings depending on what type of movie I'm watching. Like if I'm watching some Anime or Animated movie, I find that I increase the sharpening a little bit and have to force Nvidia Decoder to use Video Deinterlacing too.

my bad, 14 hour workdays on the road will do that too you (that and all the ati fanbois are confusing me lol).....but click on the link i did for my setting above. i compare purevideo (which admittedly is atrocious) vs. ffdshow first hand. ;)

I use Purevideo+ffdshow. I can't seem to get Purevideo to run in Hardware Mode if ffdshow is running. I basically use Purevideo Decoder to Decode and Deinterlace it, then I have ffdshow work it's magic and make it all pretty and clean and nice :)

And your comparison is great too. ffdshow really give Purevideo a little ass whopping ;). ffdshow screenshots look so much nicer and sharper. But still, when your viewing it on a 19in LCD screen (with 1280x1024 native) with 1440x960, it still has a bit of blowing up the 720x480 video to do. So nothing is perfect (expect maby a projector when your sitting 6 ft. away from it.
