How do you video conference?

We got a webcam so grandma can see granddaughter during phonecalls....she got one too. How do we send the images to each other in real time during calls? Also, I'm obviously new at this, but the video lag is significant, even looking at my own image on my screen.....is there any way to speed this up? What hardware/software determines this? Thanks.

We have been doing the same thing at my house for the grandparents. I have tried SightSpeed, Skype (not the new beta version with improved video quality) and Windows Live Messenger. We found that Windows Live Messenger to be the best so far (still looking). It allows us to view everything in real time and the audio stays in sync. However we wish the video quality would be better. We run the video chat at full screen and it is a little blurry.

Actually I just took a look at my camera specs versus the new logitech cameras (QuickCam Pro 9000 for example) and it looks like my current webcam is limited to 640 x 480 pixels live video. The news ones can do 960 x 720 pixels live video. And Skype is the only software that I know that allows streaming of that resolution.

So I guess we will be buying new webcams and switching over to Skype!!

yeah skype is the best,
and some video lag is normal, since the framerate on a webcam is pretty low

There was windows netmeeting but I think live messenger is better now. just make sure you're not using your telephone and the webcame, because there will be a big delay there. use your computers mic.
