How do you use the search function?

I search "ati" in all forums, and it gives me like 7 threads? And most of the time when I look for something and know it's there, I get 0 results.

You have to use "title and summary". "Title or body" and "body only" don't work. "Archived messages" works a little, but in many cases misses any threads in the last year or sometimes more.

Google works better:

Use Google to search the forums. It's actually pretty good.
Google: keyword site:forums.anandtech.com
If the links are broken, copy the link shown in text under the result and add &arctab=y to the URL to access it through the AT forum archive.

You can search a specific forum category with Google but it's a little more complicated.
widescreen inurl:catid=31 site:forums.anandtech.com will search only the Video forum (catid=31) for "widescreen".

AnandTech Sys Admin said "The problem simply is that the forum administration role(s) are up in the air and have been. We are focusing on the bigger issues at hand right now, such as a large upgrade of hardware and some backend software, and then hopefully the forums will become a priority. As stated before, we should be able to work this through first quarter no problem. "

We'll see.

As far as I can tell, the "title or body" default actually searches "title and NOT body". So if the word is in the title and the body, it won't show up. Since most people mention the title words somewhere in the body, it is a useless search and won't come up with much of anything.

Two 5 second fixes: (1) Change the default to "title and summary" or (2) remove the NOT in the search alghrothm.

But my complaints have gone nowhere as they don't have 5 seconds to fix it forever.

There are many other fundamental problems with the search (such as the selection of which forum to search is broken). But those are less critical and would probably require extensive work to correct.

the selection of which forum to search is broken

I haven't noticed that one. How is that broken?

I had it (as well as other problems) all listed in one of the many search threads in Forum Issues once. I could link you to it, if I could find it. ;) I was answered that it is too much work to fix and no one uses that feature, so they won't fix it.

Try these steps.
1) Suppose you want to post about all of the excessive Nintendo Wii threads in Forum Issues. But first you want to make certain there isn't another thread on the subject. (I choose this just as an example that proves the search problem, not because there is anything wrong with the Nintendo threads.)
2) Go to advanced search.
3) Select just "Forum Issues" only in the list of categories.
4) Search for "Nintendo" in "All of these words", current messages, "Title and Summary".
5) No results found (as I would expect, I chose a silly example).
6) But you think, maybe I'll redo the search for "Wii" instead of "Nintendo".

Now I'll list two different problems.

7a) Click the "back" link on the AT Search web page. All of your settings are forever lost. The word "Nintendo" is lost (if you wanted to search in another forum), the "Title and summary" part is lost, so if you do a dozen searches, you have to remember each time to reset it. Heck, all of your settings are lost, check boxes and all. Since the search is broken and you often have to search a dozen times to finally find the right thread, reselecting everything each time is a real pain. And if you forget one checkbox and/or combo box option once, your whole excersize needs to be redone. But this isn't the issue I complained about above.

7b) Redo the steps above, but this time click the Back Button on your browser (this problem occurs in Internet Explorer, I assume it occurs in other browsers too).
8) Oh look, the settings are there, how nice it is to not have to retype "Nintendo", you don't have to reselect "current"/"archived" or "Title and Summary" or any of the check boxes.
9) Except for one thing is lost. The "Forum Issues" part is no longer selected and in fact every forum is selected. Remember we just want to research for "Wii" in Forum Issues.
10) No problem, press the "Clear all" button.
11) What's that you say? The "Clear All" button doesn't work anymore? No problem, press it 3-4 more times, it'll eventually work.
12) At least, it automatically scrolled down to "Forum Issues" for you. What a wonderful feature. That is, unless you redid this whole exercise searching in "Hot Deals" or anything else at the top. Not only does the "Clear all" button fail but it scrolls to the bottom and sometimes won't let you scroll back up.

I could go on with other problems in the forum selection, but that is enough for a start I guess.

I guess I always use the browser back as I hadn't run across this problem in all these years. Since it appears to be too much work to make the parts useable that don't function AT ALL, I'll have to agree that changing this when it does function (even if you have to know how) should come later. Maybe they'll tackle them all at once. We can always hope.

Thanks, I never thought of that.
