How do you use an aux jack to connect an iPod to a car?

I have no idea. I guess this is a new feature on a lot of cars, but I've never seen an aux connector. Unless i'm just retarded, which is possible.

Anyone?

Um...
you just plug it in?

Or if it's an auxilary port you just buy a cable...

or...
I don't know what I'm talking about but I just took a guess :)

An "aux jack" is basically an audio input the size of a headphone plug. You simply get a 3.5mm male to male audio cable, plug one end into your ipod and plug the other end into the "aux jack".

first link :p

I just installed an after market head unit in my car last week with an aux input to listen to my ipod with (I didn't get one with a direct ipod link because my friends use non-iPods and sometimes I plug theirs in when we're on the road, and I'd hate to be screwed when I buy a different mp3 player). plug one end into the input on your head unit, plug the other end into your ipod, and you control everything through your ipod. not too complicated.

edit: there are also some car stereos that hook right up to your ipod's dock and allow you to control the ipod through the stereo interface, but that wouldn't be advertised as an aux input.

Well, if your headunit had RCA jacks it'd be easy, but you'd probably know if it did....

Otherwise, my friend bought an adapter that let him hook up his iPod to the connector that would normally handle a CD changer, but that required taking apart the center console.

If the aux jack is in the back of your headunit, then you need a aux to RCA out, then a RCA to 3.5mm adapter. Then a 3.5mm audio cable to go into the headphone jack of the ipod.

A lot of new cars have an aux input on the dash, so then you'd only need a 3.5mm audio cable whcih would also plug into the headphone jack of the ipod.

Depends on the Aux-input. My headunit uses RCA inputs with a fairly high impedance. In addition to an RCA-->1/8" adapter, I'm using a cMoy headphone amplifier to boost the signal to a normal level. It works without the pre-amplification, but doesn't get loud enough.

Go to Radioshack and tell them you want a "minijack to minijack" cable, buy the cheap one ($6). Plug into the the the little hole and hit the "aux" button. I now carry this cable with me on the road because most rental cars have an aux input on the front of the deck.

I bought a special cable with a small rolling thing in the center which keeps me to have the cable verywhere in the car. The cable is connecting to docking part, so phone hole is free and I can keep my phones connected.

my brother in law let me try his, but it didnt work.

one side was too small for either the ipod jack or the aux jack, and one side was perfect (the bigger side).

its an 07 camry.

Anyone know what i am talking about now (as in what size is appropriate)?

thanks

it's stupid that more car manufactures aren't including this from the factory - instead leaving it up to hobbiests to create their own... THe subaru crowd has been in the same boat and I was left to purchase a similar board to that in order to hack in an aux jack for my car.

In the old car, I'd just connect the cable to it like everyone else has said. I just got a new car Saturday that has actual iPod integration, so I plug it in like I normally would and it charges, shows me the songs through the nav screen, etc.

I have a 2006 Mazda3s. 2007+ Mazda3s (and likely all other Mazda vehicle) have an auxillary port either in the dash or in the center console.

I think something like 70% of new cars have iPod connectivity.

Go to your local electronics parts store and pic up an aux cable (looks like your earbud jack on both ends). Plug one end into your iPod and the other end into your car stereo. Simple isn't it? :p
