how do you use a joystick in Call of Duty 2?

I guess you could do joystick for movement and mouse for looking.

I'd have trouble getting used to it, though.

joystick for movement would actually be better than WASD if you could get used to it. since you have a full range of motion instead of 8 directions. kind of like on a console with 2 control sticks.

Do yourself a favor and ditch the stick !! I began playing Quake with a gamepad and was convinced to switch to kboard/mouse after a few months. I spent an hour+ running into walls looking at my feet, but after that I soon learned how to adapt. I had screwed up my mlook tho and still used the kboard to look up and down .. a huge tactical disadvantage, but I did surprisingly well even using that handicapped method.

Just try it, its such a HUGE difference in the control fluidity. Sticks and gamepads are soooo flight sim 90's ....
