How do you use a combination lock?

Its been years since I've used one of these locks. I need to open a friends locker tomorrow. He gave me the code.

Is this right?

Turn a few times right to reset
turn left to first number
turn right to second number
turn left to third number

Do I have to go around at least once in between numbers or anything?

On some locks you have to pass the number up 2 or three times before stopping and going to the next number. I guess this could be determined based on the model and/or manufacturer of the lock. You wouldn't happen to know the brand of the lock would you?

2 revolutions to the right for the first number
1 revolution to the left for the 2nd number
1 revolution toward the right for the 3rd number

At least that's how the basic masterlocks at school work, maybe some are different..

I have no idea. Its not my lock and I'm not sure what kind it is.

Mine is..

Spin it freely to the right, stop at first number after two or three rotations.
Make one full rotation to the left, and then stop at second number after first rotation is done.
Go right, and don't pass third number. You shouldn't make a full rotation here.

Then go by Baked and ranmaniac.

Or just use an aluminum can to open it. Cut small strip and fold to get a point on it, wrap around lock arm and down into lock.

two times one direction (pass first number), and land on the number (3rd time number appears, land on it)
in opposite direction, pass the second number once, then land on it next time
and then reverse direction, and land on 3rd number (no passes)

this is typically the correct sequence, however, the correct sequence of actual directions for a Master Lock (most common) is escaping me at the moment, and I've used master locks my whole life. It's muscle memory at this point.

I believe it's clockwise, counter, then clockwise (so, numbers pass from high to low, then low to high, then high to low again).

if its not Master Lock, hell... the number of spins could even be different. So hope it's Masterlock.

Buddy should have told you sequence, or you should have asked. They can be/are different between brands.

Then ones i regularly use are the exact opposite going CCW, CW, CCW, then CW to 0 to open.
